At Wax Digital, we had the profound honor of producing a short film for Laura and Scott at Northumberland Woodland Burial & Crematorium. This poignant film tells the story of their Mk. 1a R6762 Spitfire, a meticulously crafted replica of the Spitfire flown by Sergeant Kai Arthur Knagenhjelm, which tragically crashed 80 years ago.
Capturing a Day of Remembrance
Our team set out to capture the essence of the Spitfire and the deeply moving ceremony featuring the Durham Northumberland Wing RAF Cadets. The event marked the installation of the Spitfire on its original tie-down, a significant part of the historic RAF Eshott’s land. Filming alongside ITV news, we aimed to document the key moments of the day, ensuring the solemnity and historical significance were conveyed with respect and clarity.
The Ceremony and Its Significance
The ceremony was more than just an unveiling; it was a commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Eshott air collision. This tragic event resulted in the deaths of Norwegian Spitfire pilot, Sergeant Knagenhjelm, and American Thunderbolt pilot, First Lieutenant Anthony L. Serapiglia. The film captures the spirit of remembrance, honoring these brave pilots who gave their lives during World War II.
A Collaborative Effort
Remembering Sergeant Knagenhjelm
Sergeant Knagenhjelm’s remains were initially taken to Honour Oak in London for cremation before being repatriated to Oslo, Norway. Born on October 24, 1924, Kai Knagenhjelm and his family had relocated to New York to escape Nazi occupation. He was educated in New York and attended Harvard University for a semester before joining the Royal Norwegian Air Force. At the time of his passing, he was just 19 years old.

The replica Spitfire serves as a poignant memorial, honoring those who lost their lives during the Eshott air collision and marking a significant moment in northeastern aviation history.
